Michelle's Goals for 2011:
- use 75 postage stamps (possible? Well, this can cover xmas thank-yous, birthday thank-yous, final address changes, next year's xmas cards, and all the letters that I hope to write. Looking at last year's goal of only writing five letters it seems pretty steep, but I didn't think that before making this comparison. And I received 100 stamps for Christmas.)
- read five books inspired by Mara
- read "Introduction to Biology," my high school biology textbook
- drink more liquids
- reduce my yarn stores (by using them up)
It would also be great if I kept my house tidy and cleaned more, cooked more, and was regularly on time for work... but I'm afraid of formulating those as goals in case I fail!

Review of 2010 Goals
Goals for 2010:
- read Anne of Green Gables - done! check! hurrah! I even went on to read Emily of New Moon and a biography of L.M. Montgomery.
- read The Lord of the Rings - nope. These books are gigantic, and I never got into the mood for them. I guess I set my reading goals too high.
- change the pictures in the frames in the hall-square - done!
- write Christmas thank you cards - mostly done, I think. That was a long time ago, and now it's time to do it again.
- write five letters - I wrote lots and lots of letters! Five were completed by late summer, and then when I moved I began a habit of writing more.
- publish the first year of my blog - done! It was a frustrating situation due to shipping errors, but I think I'll go ahead and publish more... I'm not in a hurry though. (It doesn't help that I wrote so much in the next year - that's a lot to edit and pay for!)
- clean out the fridge and cupboards - I did this. And then I super duper did this when I moved out.
- cook 12 recipes out of one cookbook - I don't think I achieved this one. I tried, and it inspired me to cook more, but twelve recipes out of one book took too much perseverance. Over the year, I definitely made twelve recipes out of several books, though! That's almost success!

Review
My goals for 2009 were to read five of the books considered by Penguin to be the Best Books Ever Written, and to buy napkins. I am happy to say that I achieved both of these goals!
I read:
1) The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli
2) The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky
3) Fifth Business by Roberston Davies
4) The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
5) Lady Chatterley's Lover by D H Lawrence
I almost didn't make it: it was mid-December and I hadn't read a fifth book yet. The ones I had on board didn't really appeal to me, and they seemed difficult when I just wanted an easy read. But then Lady Chatterley's Lover arrived in the mail and drew me in, and I was able to finish it in time. Hooray!
I liked having this goal. It encouraged me to read more intelligent literature and to experience for myself a few of the literary classics that culture so often alludes to. At the same time that it provided a suggested reading list, it also encouraged me to deviate from that list and read other classic books.
I also valued how this goal was not restrictive: it didn't define everything I had to read all year. I had time to achieve it and also to read anything else I wanted, whatever that was.
Reading Statistics 2009
Total number of books read: 43
Fiction 27
--- smart fiction 7
--- respectable fiction 10
--- easy/silly fiction 10
Non-Fiction 16
--- food 2
--- politics 3
--- Christian reflections 5
--- relationships 3
--- philosophy 2
--- misc 2
Religious 10 (some fiction, some non)

New Year!
I made some New Years Resolution-y goals for this year:1) buy some napkins from Ikea
2) read 5 of the books on Penguin's Best Books Ever Written list
That's it. I figure I can probably achieve that.
...Remembering last year's thoughts
A friend posted a series of pictures on her blog chronicling the year in her life. To look back, it seems bizarre to me that this year has included so much - that all these events happened in only the past twelve months. Crazy! I wonder what the view from a year from now will look like...
We went to see fireworks last night. Fireworks in the winter is a different experience than fireworks in the summer. Usually I hope they go on and on. This time I wanted them to be over as soon as possible. "Is this the last one? Please? My face is freezing off!"
